[ARCHIVED] Park Forest Police issues over 80 citations during campaign focused on speeding, impaired driving

The Park Forest Police Department recently wrapped up its participation in the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, which was conducted from Jan. 27 to Feb. 10.

This program specifically targeted the weeks leading up to and including the Super Bowl, a time known for increased traffic and potential impaired driving due to celebrations.

Deputy Chief Kristopher Vallow emphasized that the two separate campaigns funded by IDOT were primarily aimed at reducing incidents of speeding and identifying impaired drivers. During this enforcement period, officers dedicated an additional 43 hours to patrol efforts, stopping a total of 70 vehicles. These measures resulted in the issuance of over 80 citations for various traffic violations, alongside 9 arrests for offenses related to driving under the influence or other criminal offenses.

"The primary goal of our traffic enforcement efforts is not to generate revenue, but to ensure the safety of everyone using the roads," Vallow said. "We've received numerous complaints from residents about speeding motorists in our community, and today I’m proud to announce that our department issued 37 citations specifically for speeding violations."

Vallow clarified that not every traffic stop led to a citation; in fact, some stops resulted in multiple citations being issued to drivers who were found to be in violation of several laws. He stressed the importance of his message: it is crucial for individuals to drink responsibly and celebrate in moderation, allowing everyone to return home safely after festivities.

Vallow also pointed out that the increased presence of law enforcement on the roads led to several interactions with motorists, both those pulled over and others observing the stops. He hopes these encounters will raise awareness and correct any dangerous behaviors exhibited by drivers in the Village of Park Forest.
