The Youth Commission announced earlier this week its annual Youth Day event will take place on Saturday, Aug 12.
Adina McCollough, the Recreation Supervisor of the Department of Park and Recreation and Community Health, said the day will be filled with various events, including a free backpack giveaway.
"Residents can expect an exciting and vibrant Youth Day filled with a range of engaging activities and offerings," McCollough said. "From vendors showcasing their products and services to giveaways and entertainment, there will be something for everyone."
McCollough said Youth Day will feature various sports, face painting, and a basketball tournament. She said it's an excellent opportunity for the community to come out before young people return to school this fall.
McCollough added that people who come out for Youth Day will get acquainted with the Youth Commission. The mayor appoints the Youth Commission's commissioners. Those who are interested can click here to apply.
McCollough said they meet the second Thursday of every month until August and the second Wednesday in all other months. The full schedule can be found here.
McCollough urged young people in Park Forest should apply and be a part of the Youth Commission so they can have a positive impact on their community.
"It's crucial for young people to be a part of because they provide opportunities for engagement, connection, and empowerment," McCollough said. "By organizing and participating in various activities throughout the year, the Commission creates a platform for young people to participate in their community actively."
The Park Forest Youth Commission presents Youth Day on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m on the Village Green at 349 Main Street.
