Park Forest Sustainability Coordinator Carrie Malfeo introduced a resolution to the board of trustees regarding an electric vehicle charging grant with Cook County at Monday night's Board meeting at Village Hall.
If the board gives its approval, the Village and Cook County will enter into an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) aimed at designing, installing, and operating public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations within the Village. This initiative not only aligns with Cook County's comprehensive Policy Roadmap but is also bolstered by financial resources made available through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Moreover, Malfeo said it strongly corresponds with the goals outlined in the Village of Park Forest's Sustainability Plan and the Climate Action and Resilience Plan, which emphasize the importance of fostering sustainable practices and reducing carbon emissions.
"The introduction of these EV charging stations will enhance the Village's commitment to environmentally friendly transportation options, promote the adoption of electric vehicles, and contribute to the overall reduction of greenhouse gases in the community," Malfeo said.
Cook County has allocated federal funds to install up to five dual-port Level 2 EV charging stations in suburban communities where service gaps exist, particularly in under-resourced areas with a high concentration of multi-family or renter-occupied housing.
Under the proposed IGA, the Village of Park Forest will be responsible for selecting suitable sites and Cook County will oversee site design, construction, and equipment procurement, covering networking and warranty fees for the first five years of operation
From the sixth year onwards, the Village of Park Forest will be responsible for maintaining the charging stations, providing public access, and managing operational costs, including electricity and networking fees.
This agreement aims to address the rising ownership of electric vehicles (EVs) and expand access to charging infrastructure, promoting alternative fuel sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The new charging stations will benefit residents and visitors, contributing to the Village's sustainability and economic vitality.
The Park Forest Board of Trustees are expected to vote on this resolution at next week’s Board meeting on Monday, Dec 9.
