[ARCHIVED] Gardening series runs through October

The Village of Park Forest, in collaboration with the Park Forest Environment Commission, University of Illinois Extension, Thorn Creek Nature Center and the Park Forest Garden Club, present a series of lectures for both beginners and avid gardeners. The series runs through October. The following are several of the programs to look forward to this upcoming season.

February 15* – Seed Starting – Bill & Jennifer Tobin, U of I Master Gardeners
Many vegetables, flowers and herbs will not grow and flower in our northern climate unless they are given a head start because our summers just aren’t long enough. Learn how to start seeds like a pro. *This lecture will be held at a special location: Dining on the Green, 349 Main Street, Park Forest, Ill.

March 15 – Veggie Gardening Success - Nancy Pollard, U of I Educator, Horticulture
What to plant when? Raised bed or in ground gardening? Come learn watering and plant nutrition tips along with soil testing and much more! Great for both beginners and avid gardeners.

April 19 – Rain Gardens –Marva King, U of I Master Gardener
Capture rain runoff in a garden to improve water quality, and enjoy nature in your yard. Keep clean fresh water from flooding and overwhelming sewer systems. Learn how.

May 17 – Organic Pest Control – James Theuri, U of I Educator, Local Foods
You can grow fresh wholesome food. Learn how to beat the weeds, and minimize pests naturally.

June 21 – Pollinator insects - Kelly Allsup

July 19 - Butterfly Gardens – Lynn Nitz Mercaeants or Butterfly Guy
Find out the basic needs of common Illinois butterflies so you can, design butterfly friendly gardens. We’ll also show you what plants will attract these “flowers of the air.”

Aug 16 – Herbs - Pam Bassu
Throughout human history, herbs have been used as flavorings, medicines, decorations, scents, and protective garden plants. Herbs delight the senses whether you choose to cook and craft with them or just enjoy them as fine fragrant flora.

Sept 20 – Bulbs including garlic – Judy & James Theuri
Fall planted bulbs from garlic to tulips add color and spice to our lives. Learn how to plan for a multi-season floral bloom, and how to be successful with garlic and onions too!

Oct 18 – Donald Nekrosius - Caring for hand tools workshop (special time from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) – Bring a hand tool, learn how to sharpen and clean them like a pro.

All lectures take place on the third Saturday of each month, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Park Forest's Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive.
