[ARCHIVED] Public Works urges residents to help clean storm drains ahead heavy rains

The Village of Park Forest Department of Public Works is urging residents to clean out inlet frames, the storm drains, in their neighborhood in preparation for heavy rainfall expected tonight and tomorrow from the remnants of Tropical Storm Beryl.

Assistant Director Nick Christie said that crews will work continuously on Tuesday to clear as many inlet frames as possible. However, he mentioned that if residents can pitch in, it will help lessen the possibility of street flooding over the next 24 to 48 hours.

"As we're in the middle of the grass-cutting season, there are a lot of grass clippings covering the inlet frames throughout the Village," Christie said. "The grass clippings covering those inlet frames will prevent excess water from draining properly and will cause street flooding."

The Village of Park Forest and Cook and Will Counties are under a Flood Watch starting at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and continuing until Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service predicts that three to four inches of rain could fall across the area, with localized heavier amounts.

Christie expressed concern that street flooding could occur if the inlet frames aren't cleared, despite the extra rainfall benefiting people's lawns and gardens.

"Clogged inlets are the main reason for street flooding in Park Forest," Christie said. "So, we're strongly encouraging people to help us by ensuring they are cleared ahead of this storm."
