Grassroots effort aims to keep Park Forest walkways safe, meeting set Aug. 21

A resident of Park Forest is leading a volunteer initiative to help maintain the Village’s mid-block crosswalks, also known as sidewalk cut-throughs or “catwalks.” These walkways provide important connections to schools, parks, and community spaces.

Michele Johnson, a Village resident, is launching the “Cut Thru Crew” to bring neighbors together in caring for the numerous public walkways throughout Park Forest neighborhoods. While these walkways are public property, many nearby homeowners have voluntarily maintained them over the years. Some remain well-kept thanks to residents’ efforts, while others have become overgrown.

Public Works Director Roderick Ysaguirre expressed support for Johnson’s proposal.

“Anytime a resident steps forward with an idea to make Park Forest a better place, it’s something to be celebrated,” Ysaguirre stated. “These walkways are a unique part of our community design, and when neighbors work together to keep them safe and inviting, it benefits everyone.”

The Cut Thru Crew will hold its inaugural meeting on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room at the Park Forest Library, located at 400 Lakewood Blvd. Organizers invite anyone interested in helping, regardless of whether they live next to a walkway.

“This is truly a grassroots, volunteer-led effort,” Johnson said. “We want to recognize those who have been quietly maintaining these spaces for years while encouraging others to take part and take pride in them.”
