Park Forest to host Shred/Drug Take-Back Event, Oct. 4

Residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of sensitive documents and unused prescription drugs during Park Forest’s Fall Shred/Drug Take-Back Event on Saturday, Oct. 4.

This free event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of Forest Boulevard and Lakewood Boulevard, across from the Park Forest Police Station. Shredding will be conducted on-site.

Hosted in partnership with Homewood Disposal Service and the Park Forest Police Department, this event aims to help residents protect their personal information and prevent unused medications from falling into the wrong hands.

“Events like this are important because they provide a safe, secure way to dispose of sensitive documents and medications,” said Carrie Malfeo, the Village’s sustainability coordinator. “Not only does it help protect individuals from identity theft, but it also keeps harmful materials out of our landfills and waterways.”

Participants are asked to limit paper drop-offs to two boxes or bags per vehicle. Only sensitive paper documents will be accepted; items such as garbage, three-ring binders, binder clips, and plastic sleeves will not be allowed.

For prescription drugs, residents may drop off pills and capsules, but liquids and sharps will not be accepted.

Organizers stress that residency is not required, and residents from surrounding communities are encouraged to participate.

“We understand these issues extend beyond Park Forest,” Malfeo said. “By opening this up to our neighbors, we’re making it easier for more households to dispose of these items in a safe and responsible way.”

Drivers can remain in their vehicles while staff and volunteers collect items directly from their trunks.
