Each year thousands of Americans are injured, and some are killed, in accidents involving fireworks. More serious injuries attributed to fireworks include amputations of fingers and hands, loss of sight and serious burns.
Many people think fireworks are harmless, but the truth is they are very dangerous and they can burn, maim and kill. Even sparklers, which most people don't think twice about lighting and letting a child hold, are dangerous - they burn at a temperature over 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.
Children continue to have the highest risk of serious injuries from fireworks related accidents. It is estimated that 75% of all injuries and deaths related to fireworks are attributable to people under the age of 25. Before you just "fool around" with fireworks keep the following facts in mind...
* One of every three fireworks injuries is to the eyes.
* One of every four fireworks eye injuries means some kind of permanent blindness.
* Fireworks not only damage eyes, but hands, fingers, faces, ears and bodies.
* Fireworks are gunpowder explosives and are just plain dangerous.
Although we read about injuries sustained during public fireworks displays, they still remain the safest way to enjoy fireworks with less than 6% of all injuries occurring at public displays. To keep yourself and your family safe, it's best to leave the fireworks shows to the pros.
DON'T LOSE A FIFTH ON THE 4TH!
