Park Forest to welcome Imishe Massage, a dream years in the making

For more than a decade, La’ Paca Austin worked long hours in warehouses, lifting and moving heavy items at places like UPS, Amazon, and Frito-Lay. Like many of her coworkers, she often left work with aches and pains. However, one day, a simple act of kindness changed the course of her life.

“I had a coworker who was hurting, and I just said, ‘Let me help you out,’” Austin recalled. “Afterward, he told me I was really talented and asked if I had ever considered becoming a massage therapist. Honestly, I hadn’t — I didn’t even know that was a career option.”

That encouragement sparked a new path for Austin. She began researching massage therapy schools and later enrolled at the Soma Institute in downtown Chicago. Balancing school, part-time work, and raising her two sons wasn’t easy, and there were times she wanted to quit. But with determination and faith, she completed her training and gained years of experience in the wellness industry.

Eight years later, Austin is stepping into her dream. Her new business, Imishe Massage — named after her middle name — will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. in Downtown Park Forest, located at 218 Forest Blvd.

For Austin, the business is about more than just massage; it’s about healing, connection, and serving others. She offers traditional massage, targeted stretching sessions, and what she calls a “forever discount” for seniors, ensuring their rates will never increase.

“I love my older clients,” Austin said. “They need care, too. They need love, touch, and relief.”

Her journey hasn’t been without setbacks. Just a few months ago, Austin survived a serious car accident that left her with a fractured hand. This unfortunate timing forced her to delay her grand opening, but it did not diminish her vision.

“I’ve always spoken things into existence, saying, ‘I’m going to have my own spot. Just wait, it’s coming,’” Austin said. “Now, I’m more polished, more established, and ready to serve the community.”

Austin mentioned that her oldest son, now a high school senior, has been her biggest motivation.

“The least I could do is get this business started so I can send my son off to graduation knowing I followed my own dreams too,” Austin said.

As she prepares to welcome clients to Imishe Massage, Austin hopes her story inspires others who may feel stuck or afraid to take a leap.

“My journey was long, but I pushed forward,” Austin said. “I just hope people will come out, give me a chance, and let me serve them. This business isn’t just for me — it’s for the community.”
