Village of Park Forest - Recreation, Parks & Community Health News Posted on March 28, 2025

The Park Forest Recreation, Parks & Community Health Department is hosting a tribute and fundraiser event at the Nathan Manilow Theater inside Park Forest Freedom Hall on April 25. The event aims to raise money for the Youth Scholarship Program.

The tribute will present the story of "The Color Purple" from the perspective of Shug Avery. Chicagoland native Sandy Redd, a former contestant on NBC's "The Voice," will perform alongside artist and performer Shaheerah Farrakhan. Both have been rehearsing at Park Forest Village Hall for several weeks to prepare for this event.

In addition to sharing "The Color Purple" story, the program will generate funds to support the Youth Scholarship Program, which enables Park Forest children to attend summer programs offered by the Village.

"It's all about giving back to the community," Redd said. "It may sound cliché, but our children are our future. We must invest in them and ensure they have positive activities to engage in during the summer."

Redd emphasized that summer camps and programs are essential for kids because they foster independence, build social skills, promote personal growth, and create a unique environment for learning and fun. Additionally, these programs encourage resilience and self-confidence.

"It's a win-win for everybody," Redd said. "You can come out and enjoy a great show, and at the same time, we're generating revenue for a good cause."

Redd and Farrakhan are scheduled to perform on Friday, April 25. Tickets are available for $60 and can be purchased by clicking this link. "The Color Purple" is one of many shows taking place at the Nathan Manilow Theater inside Park Forest Freedom Hall, located at 410 Lakewood Blvd., next month.
