With Independence Day just around the corner, the Park Forest Police Department is preparing for increased traffic enforcement to enhance the safety of all residents and motorists.
The Park Forest Police Department is collaborating with the Illinois State Police and over 200 local police and sheriff's departments in a unified effort to enhance statewide enforcement. The enforcement period began on June 21 and will continue through the early morning hours of July 8.
Deputy Chief Kristopher Vallow said officers are working tirelessly to keep impaired drivers off the road and ticketing unbuckled motorists.
"Our number one priority is making sure people are safe on the roadways during the holiday season," Vallow said. "Drunk drivers aren't just a danger to themselves but everyone else. So, this partnership with ISP and other agencies will help us keep the streets safe here in Park Forest."
The 4th of July holiday campaign is "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, Drive High Get a DUI." Vallow said that even though using and having marijuana is legal in Illinois, the laws about driving under the influence of marijuana (also called cannabis) have not changed.
It is still against the law to drive or be in control of a car while under the influence of cannabis or to have a certain amount of cannabis in your blood or other bodily substances.
"Just be smart," Vallow said. "Designate a sober driver before you go out. If you find yourself impaired, use safe alternatives such as taxis, public transit, and ride-sharing apps, or contact a sober friend or family member for a ride."
Vallow said if you suspect someone is driving under the influence, do not hesitate to dial 911.
