In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Village of Park Forest will host an event next Tuesday to inform residents about the importance of early detection.
Recreation, Parks & Community Health Director Margaret Lewis, who's an eight-year survivor, said this is personal to her because many women don't realize that there are simple things they can do to help detect the deadly disease.
"Monthly breast self-exams are very important because they help you become familiar with how your breasts feel and what they look like," Lewis said. "So if there's something unusual, it would help you recognize those changes more quickly."
Lewis said self-exams are extremely important because the second you notice a change in your breast, a medical provider can refer to a specialist for additional assessment.
At the event, starting at 10 a.m., on the lower level of Village Hall, a "Go Pink" line dance class will be held, welcoming residents to support the fight against breast cancer and connect with fellow community members.
In addition to the dance class, a boxed lunch will be provided, and attendees will have the chance to gain insights from Georgina Menyah and explore various ways to contribute to the ongoing battle against breast cancer. The day will conclude with guest Toren Turner, an art therapist, who will discuss how art therapy can be beneficial and help reduce stress.
The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to register by scanning the QR code on the flyer or calling 708-748-2005
