Work is progressing on the long-planned reconstruction of Forest Boulevard, with utility crews now preparing the corridor ahead of major road construction expected to begin later this spring.
Nicor Gas is currently onsite, relocating gas lines along Forest Boulevard in advance of the Village’s upcoming roadway and streetscape improvements. ComEd is also expected to relocate electrical infrastructure, with work tentatively anticipated in April.
Village officials say road construction is projected to begin in May, pending completion of the utility relocations.
The Forest Boulevard Reconstruction Project has been years in the making and is funded in large part through more than $4.2 million in state and county grants. The project reimagines the corridor between Indianwood and Lakewood boulevards as a “complete street” — a design approach intended to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and residents of all ages and abilities.
Plans call for eliminating the western two lanes of Forest Boulevard in that stretch and converting the space into a linear park with a multi-use path extending to Westwood Drive. Future plans include extending the path east to Allegheny Street.
In addition to the new trail, the project includes a fully rebuilt roadway with ADA-accessible infrastructure, new curbs and gutters, improved drainage, and new parking on both sides of the street to better serve nearby Park Forest Co-op communities.
Village officials say the improvements are designed to enhance livability, modernize aging infrastructure, and position Park Forest as a model for innovative suburban redevelopment.
Additional construction updates will be shared with residents as the project moves forward.
