As families in the south suburbs prepare for the upcoming school year, the Park Forest-Richton Park Neighborhood Network (PRNN) is stepping up to help by hosting a free school supply giveaway next month.
The event, titled “Packs the Bag,” will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the PRNN Resource Center, located at 200 Main St. in Park Forest. Students of all ages who reside in Park Forest and Richton Park are eligible to receive supplies, though proof of residency is required.
Organizers say the event is part of an ongoing commitment to support local youth and ensure that no student starts the school year at a disadvantage.
“Providing essential school supplies isn’t just about pencils and notebooks,” said Cherise Williams, PRNN program organizer. “It’s about ensuring that every child feels prepared and confident when they walk into the classroom on the first day. That confidence can set the tone for their entire school year.”
Attendees must RSVP in advance. Registration can be completed online by clicking here or by scanning the QR code found on promotional materials.
Williams explained that the event is specifically tailored for families in Park Forest and Richton Park.
“We know that back-to-school shopping can be stressful, especially for parents juggling bills, food, and other essentials,” Williams said. “This event is about alleviating that burden just a little and helping students arrive ready to learn.”
Supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. For more information, residents can call 708-238-5020 ext. 106 or visit parkforestrichtonparknn.org.
“This is a celebration of our kids and our communities,” Williams said. “We hope families will join us, pick up supplies, and know that they’re not alone—we’re in this together.”
