An exciting project is coming to your neighborhood this fall! The Village is going to install a Mini Forest pilot project on two Village-owned vacant lots, located at the corner of Marquette Street and Niagra Street!
Sign-up below to take part in a Mini Forest Tree Planting Party taking place on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The goal of this project is to create a complex ecosystem perfectly suited to local conditions that will improve biodiversity, support pollinators, absorb CO2, and reduce stormwater run-off.
Bring gloves, a shovel, and a reusable water bottle. Lunch will be provided.
More about this project
The Village’s Climate Action and Resilience Plan (2019), established the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent by 2025 (from the 2010 baseline). The CARP also established a climate action goal to “increase canopy cover diversity on public property for air quality and shade”, and a climate adaptation goal to “incorporate green infrastructure into Village-owned parks and open space to enhance stormwater management, water quality, habitat, and educational resources”. Trees pull carbon out of the atmosphere and sequester it in the tree permanently, and they absorb stormwater and help to reduce localized flooding.
